Japanese Eartquake Update
Japanese Earthquake Update
Recently Japan suffered the consequences of a powerful earthquake and the resulting tsunami. This disaster has had a huge and dramatic effect on the region and IES Security would like to express its sincere condolences to the people of Japan.
In addition to the immediate effects of the earthquake Japan is now suffering the effects of aftershocks, nuclear power plant leakage and power shortage/interruption, as well as problems with the internal manufacturing and transportation infrastructure.
Whilst Integrated Electronic Security does not have any direct suppliers in this region, it is becoming apparent that a number of raw materials used in the parts manufactured on our behalf from our suppliers originate from Japan and the effects of this disaster are having an impact on current production of these items.
Production could be affected globally due to the reduced availability of some key raw materials that are currently only produced in Japan. The supply position with each customer’s products is slightly different and it is not possible to know how these individual situations will be resolved going forward.
The particular product types that the reduced availability of the raw materials may affect are currently LCD’s, TFT’s, Hard Drives, Chips, Circuit boards and rubber key mats. However other items may also be affected if the disruption is protracted.
Short term the actions we will be taking to ensure the continuity of supply wherever possible will be to –
• Work with our manufacturers to ensure that they maximise stock levels of key raw materials
• Identify potential alternative products and validate their stock availability
• Make recommendations for any design change options available and work on fast tracking new approvals where necessary.
The counter measures we would suggest our customers take is to –
• Review their forecasted equipment needs and update us with their preferred forward plan of requirements as soon as possible
• Consider placing longer term orders that can be used to secure production slots of key raw materials
• Consider making short term engineering resource available to rapidly review/approve alternative products should this become necessary.
IES Security will be proactive in terms of managing these issues and should you have any specific points of concern then please let us know. Although clear information on the manufacture and supply of particular products may not be available for some time, please rest assured that we will communicate any new developments as they arise
